psychosocial problems

When the media portrays adolescents, it is often in terms of their 'problems'. Are adolescents really more problem-prone than individuals at other stages of life? Or is it that the way adolescents tend to manifest problems (violence, suicide, substance abuse) are more problematic and threatening to society than the quieter problems of children?

  • Information on teen violence is easy to come by on the web. The Bureau of Justice Statistics has issued a report on gun violence. Gang membership and delinquent peers are the subject of a report by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
  • One of the most troubling aspects of adolescent health and prevention research is that many adolescent health problems are caused by voluntary actions on the part of the adolescent. Influences on adolescent suicidality include both family, personality, and critical life events. Some frightening statistics on suicide are provided by the Vermont Department of Health.
  • The White House has compiled a great deal of information on substance use, including rate changes, prevention tips and excellent information for parents.
