- Group exercise: Teaching a parenting class
- Write a short, clear description of an authoritative
parent
- How is authoritative parenting defined?
- What kind of child outcomes are associated with
authoritative parenting?
- What are key characteristics of authoritative
parents?
- Scenarios
- You have made it clear to your 15 year old daughter
that there are to be no boys in the house when you are not there.
You walk in at 5:00 and find your daughter entwined on the couch
with a boy you've never met before. He stammers something about
having to go home for dinner, and leaves. You and your daughter
are alone.
- Your 13 year old son is having a really hard
time with his math homework. He's been working on it for an hour,
and it still isn't done. It is close to his bedtime, and you know
he still has a poster to finish for social studies and a spelling
test to study for. He's tired and frustrated and when you look over
his shoulder, you see that the work is very sloppy and he's made
lots of careless errors.
- Task (for each)
- Describe some of the issues that you have to
think about as a parent before deciding what to do.
- Describe an appropriate response to this situation
that an authoritative parent might make.
- Explain why that response exemplifies authoritative
parenting.
